Tuscan vineyards are often situated in massive old castles and magnificent country estates. Today the properties are producers of excellent local wines, but also very important historical estates, with a long and interesting history. Many of the estates are property of noble families and their history is filled with stories of people, families, conflicts, wars, secrets and great journeys. Castello di Verrazzano in Greve in Chianti is one of those vineyards, that can tell the tale!

The castle is situated on a hillside, in the divine Chianti Classico, nearby the town of Greve in Chianti. Founded by the etruscan, later a roman settlement and an important military post, due to its strategic position on a high hill. Became property of the Verrazzano family in 7th century A.D. The estate started the wine making already back to 1150, which is documented in historical manuscripts, telling about ‘the vineyards situated in Verrazzano‘, preserved in the nearby abbey of Passignano.

Verrazzano historical vineyard

The castle is the birth place of Verrazzano family, one of the important noble families in the area. Giovanni da Verrazzano was born in the Verazzano castle, in the Greve valley in 1485. He became a navigator and explored for years the area of Northern America, discovering the bay of New York, where he has been recognised as an important European explorer, the city of New York named the bridge that connects Staten Island with Brooklyn, over the Hudson river, after Verrazzano’s name.
